The Ultimate Guide to Fredericksburg, TX

The Ultimate Guide to Fredericksburg, TX

Sharing is caring!

Fredericksburg is one of our absolute favorite Texas towns. Marty and I have been addicted to this city since our first visit.  I mean, where else in Texas can you see German architecture while walking down the street with a glass of wine in your hand?  This is one of the many reasons that some of the Fredericksburg experiences made our couples bucket list.   In this post, we will outline where to stay in Fredericksburg, what to do in Fredericksburg, and of course touch on some of the best wineries in Fredericksburg!

Fredericksburg is located in the Texas Hill County, 80 miles west of Austin and 70 miles north of San Antonio, in Gillespie County.

Founded by German immigrants in the mid-1800’s, Fredericksburg still maintains much of its German heritage and charm, making it an awesome little Texas town!

Where to Stay in Fredericksburg, Texas

Fredericksburg is full of charming accommodations.  Finding a bed and breakfast or a little cabin is a relaxing way to spend your time in Fredericksburg.

We usually try to stay in town and close to Main Street.  On our last visit, we used Airbnb and stayed in a cute little house just a couple of blocks off of Main.  If you’ve never used Airbnb, you should try it!  You can click here and get a $55 credit toward your first stay!

If you prefer a hotel, there are plenty of those to choose from in Fredericksburg also.  Of course, you should start by checking their reviews on TripAdvisor to ensure you find the perfect spot for yourself.

We love to book with Hotels.com .com.  By signing up for their rewards program, you earn credits for free nights.  You can’t beat that!  Some of our favorite Fredericksburg hotels include the Fredericksburg InnHampton Inn and SuitesThe Inn on Baron’s Creek, and the Fairfield Inn and Suites.

What to do in Fredericksburg-Tour the Best Wineries in Fredericksburg

    Fiesta Winery

Fredericksburg is quickly becoming one of the premier wine destinations in the United States.

According to Orbitz Travel, the Texas hill country is the second most visited wine region in the United States, only to be surpassed by Napa Valley!

I mean, there are so many great Fredericksburg, TX wineries, you could spend an entire weekend just touring the vineyards around Fredericksburg.

The majority of the wineries are located on Highway 290, and I assure you, they will not disappoint.  Whether you like red or white, dry or sweet, there is something for all wine lovers.

Read about my top picks in my post 7 Fredericksburg Wineries Not to Miss.  I love to come and spend a long weekend during one of the Hill Country Wine Trails.

This is a great opportunity to sample wines from the vineyards and explore the area.  One of my favorites is the Wildflower Wine Trail that is held in April every year.  You pay $45 for a single ticket, or $70 for a couples ticket (prices were accurate as of the date of this post).

This ticket allows you to enjoy a free tasting at each of the 46 wineries during the three-week event.  Most of the wineries charge $15 per tasting, so you are getting more than your money’s worth out of this one!

What to do in Fredericksburg- Visit the Parks

The Fredericksburg area has several beautiful parks for you to visit.  A few of our favorites are:

    Enchanted Rock

    Guide to Fredericksburg-Enchanted Rock

Located 18 miles north of Fredericksburg, Enchanted Rock is a fun day trip to do some hiking.

I describe Enchanted Rock as a giant pink Easter egg coming out of the ground.  LOL!  I know, I’m weird, but it really looks like that!

Enchanted Rock is made from granite and welcomes climbers!

If you are a novice like Marty and me, please be sure to follow the trail up the side of the rock.  Don’t be like us and decide to make your own trail.

You might find yourself on a really steep part of the rock as it starts to rain.  Did I mention it was granite?  Did I mention the granite is getting wet?  Don’t forget, we are novices!  I think you can guess what happened next.

    Lady Bird Johnson Park

You will find Lady Bird Johnson Park three miles south of Fredericksburg on Hwy 16.

This 150-acre park is a great place to spend a day with your family.  There are numerous nature trails (which are stunning during wildflower season), a pool, outdoor pavilions, tennis and basketball courts, and baseball fields.

Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park and Ranch

If you drive just east of Fredericksburg on Hwy 290, you will find Johnson City and the home to the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park and the LBJ Historical Ranch.

Marty and I had visited this area for years but didn’t go to this park until recently.  We toured the house where LBJ was born, saw where he went to school, drove to the cattle ranch, and visited the Texas White House.

    Marketplatz

While walking the main street in Fredericksburg, you will definitely come across the Marketplatz.  The Marketplatz is a city park that sits right in the middle of the town.

I love to visit the Marketplatz during Christmas when it is all decorated and festive.  During this time,  the city even has an outdoor ice skating ring!!

You will notice that the park surrounds a white octangular building.  This unique building is the Vereins Kirche.  The Vereins Kirche was the site of the first church and school in Fredericksburg.

While visiting the Marketplatz, be sure and take the time to explore the little garden as well.

What to do in Fredericksburg-Soak up the German Heritage

    Guide to Fredericksburg

One of my favorite things about Fredericksburg is the German Heritage that surrounds you in this charming little town.  Walking the streets, you will see the evidence everywhere.

If you want to experience some of this heritage first hand, be sure and visit the Pioneer Museum Complex located on Main Street.  Here you can explore early German structures and historic artifacts.

Best Places to Eat in Fredericksburg, TX

    Pizza in Fredericksburg, TX

Marty and I love good food and especially good pizza!!

The first place we stop in Fredericksburg is The Sozial Haus, located right off of main, on S. Llano.

You have to get the Spicy Italian Pizza!  This pizza, with Sriracha drizzle, will have your taste buds singing in delight!  The atmosphere here is great as well.  Enjoy one of two outdoor patios with live music and plenty of drinks.

    Guide to Fredericksburg

    Coffee in Fredericksburg, TX

For coffee in Fredericksburg, we love Java Ranch, located right on Main Street.

Java Ranch makes delicious brewed and specialty coffee.  Marty had a salted caramel mocha latte that was absolutely divine.

We also love that the interior of this coffee shop is set up like an old west Texas town.  It’s quirky and original, just our style!

    German Food in Fredericksburg, TX

For German food in Fredericksburg, we recommend the Auslander Restaurant and Biergarten, also located on Main Street.  This fun family atmosphere won’t disappoint.

Sit outside in the Biergarten, or inside their quaint German restaurant.  Here the jager schnitzel and bratwurst are our go-to dishes.  After dinner, be sure and grab a beer or wine to go, remember you can walk around town with a drink in Fredericksburg!

What to do in Fredericksburg, Texas-Go Shopping!

    Guide to Fredericksburg

Of course, you are going to shop while in Fredericksburg.  I could spend a whole day just walking down Main Street, stopping in at every shop, art gallery, and winery along the way.

On our most recent visit, Marty and I went into Rustlin’ Robs.  Rustlin’ Robs is a unique place that is packed with Texas jams, peanut butter, honey butter, all things pickled, and of course hot sauce.

Marty and I wandered through the store trying various things and then found ourselves in the back of the store with the hot sauces.  The caution signs surrounding the area, and insisting that no one under 18 try them should have been my first warning.

Marty tried the six million Scoville unit hot sauce and didn’t react (see the video on our Facebook page).

So of course, I had to try it also.

He should have been filming me!  Needless to say, it was hot! I made my way to the nearest bread product and a huge bottle of water.

Take this as an official warning-don’t do it!

Be sure and get off of Main Street as well.  There are great shops all over town containing a wide assortment of antiques, food, and other specialty products.

One of my favorite shopping sites is Wildseed Farms.  Wildseed Farms is about 7 miles east of Fredericksburg on 290.  Wildseed Farms is one of the nation’s largest working wildflower farms.

During the spring it is brimming with colorful wildflowers that you can wander through.  There is a great gift shop containing all things wildflower, including seed, pottery, and jewelry!

Of course, there is also a Biergarten and winery on the site!
